The Tulsa Police Department offers a Citizens Police Academy (CPA) two times a year at no cost to the participants. The Citizens Police Academy is designed, To develop a better understanding between citizens and their police department through education. The CPA is scheduled for 13 consecutive weeks, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. The Academies generally run from February to June and September to December.
Academy participants are selected to participate in the program by members of the Police Department or by graduates of the program. However, anyone may apply.
The Citizens Police Academy Coordinator takes applications over the telephone. A records check will then be made. Though the CPA has few restrictions for participation, having a felony arrest, an outstanding arrest warrant, or an unpaid traffic citation will disqualify an individual from participating in the program. Qualified applicants will then be sent a letter of confirmation and a list of Academy rules and regulations.
Participants receive instruction on recruit selection and training, department organization, criminal law, criminal investigation, shooting decisions, street gangs, specialty units, community policing, patrol and traffic functions, self defense, use of force, a tour of the main police station, firearms training, and much more.
Since the Citizens Police Academys inception in 1987, TPD has conducted a total of 36 classes with a total of 887 graduates.
