Our goal at Tulsa 9-1-1 is to answer the call and send help. By following these simple steps, 9-1-1 call-takers can get you the help you need as quickly as possible.  

  • Listen and answer questions. Our call-takers are trained to ask for specific information in a specific order. Please keep your answers short and let the call-taker guide the conversation. For example, we relay the description of a person to officers in this order: name, race, sex, age, and clothing description-top to bottom/outside to inside. If you don't know the answer to a question, it's ok. We will move on to the next one. The purpose is to provide consistent information to officers responding to all types of calls.
  • Know your address and repeat it once. We ask that you repeat your address for verification purposes. Call-takers are trained to gather information quickly, but also accurately. Repeating your address ensures help will arrive at the correct location.
  • Stay calm. Yelling, crying, or fast-talking makes it difficult for the call-taker to understand what you are saying. As you are giving us information, we are typing it into our Computer Aided Dispatch System, or CADS. All of our lines are recorded and we have the ability to review phone calls if needed. However, this takes time. It could delay our response time and also ties up the call-taker. 

So remember, listen to the call-taker, answer the questions, repeat information as necessary, stay calm and help 9-1-1 help you.
