Died of a heart attack in July
1973 after a prolonged and exhausting battle with a

a bystander had been stabbed in the hip. When they approached the
suspect, he scuffled with officers and ran.
During an extended struggle, Wortham was kicked in the chest,
suffered a heart attack and died.
The suspect was charged with murder, but the charge was later
dropped after a judge ruled that "no direct causal relationship
existed" between the fight and the auxiliary officer's heart
